Webinar series 5 with the theme Enzyme Application, was carried out through Zoom Cloud on Friday, October 23, 2020. The seminar was opened by the Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Karachi, Pakistan, Mr. Totok Prianamto. Dr. Munazzah Meraj from Peoples University of Medical & Health Women Nawabshah-Shaheed Benazirabad, Pakistan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Aqil Aryan Wong from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris Malaysia, participated as invites speakers in Webinar 5.

Dr. Munazzah Meraj, Assoc. Prof. in Biochemistry, presented a topic on Application of Enzymes. There are several applications of enzymes, as therapeutic agents, as analytical reagents, and for disease diagnosis. The next topic is Genetic Engineering for Industrial and Environmental Enzymes, by Dr. Muhammad Aqil Aryan Wong. He is Assoc. Prof. and Researcher in the field of microbiology and protein chemistry. Based on his explanation, there are several applications of Enzyme for industrial sector 1) in Pharmaceuticals, enzymes of transaminase, lipase, protease, nitrile hydralase, peniciline acylase, has function to synthesis of intermediates for production of active pharmaceutical ingredients; 2) in food processing industry, enzymes of trypsin, glucose, isomerasi, papain, and pectinase are used as conversion of starch to glucose, production of high fructose corn syrup, production of prebiotics, and debittering of fruit juice, 3) in detergent indutry, enzymes of protease, lipase, cellulase, and xylanase has function in the production of fatty acid methyl esters, decomposition of lignocellulotic material for biotethanol production, and 4) in the paper and pulp industry, enzymes of lipase, cellulase, xylanase, are as a removal of lignin for improved bleaching, improvement in fiber properties.
